Behind Her Exposure: Building a Community for Women in The Photography World

How It All Began

Her Exposure started as just an idea, a little spark. I’ve always been in love with film photography; the slow, intentional process, the imperfections, and the magic of not knowing exactly how a shot will turn out until it’s developed. There’s something so real and raw about it that digital just can’t capture. I felt a pull to create a place where women who feel the same way could come together, share their work, and support each other. To be specific, I was scrolling on Instagram in our Airbnb room in Japan - while my son had his morning nap.

The truth is, the world of photography can sometimes feel a little lonely, especially for women. It can be intimidating to put your art out there, and I wanted to change that. I wanted Her Exposure to be more than just a platform. I wanted it to be a safe space where women could truly be themselves, get vulnerable with their work, and feel like they’re part of something bigger.

Why I Love Film Photography

There’s just something about film. It’s slow, it’s deliberate, and it makes you think. With film, you can’t snap a hundred shots in a second and hope one turns out okay. You have to be present, thoughtful, and intentional about every shot. There’s a beauty in the imperfections, in the grain, and in the way each photo tells a story. Film feels timeless, like each image carries a little piece of you within it.

And for me, that’s why film is so special. It’s more than just capturing a moment; it’s about capturing a feeling, an emotion, a piece of the world as you see it. It reminds me to slow down and appreciate the process, and I love sharing that passion with other women who feel the same.

My Hopes for the Future of Her Exposure

As Her Exposure grows, my vision for it keeps evolving. At its core, I want it to stay true to what it was meant to be: a community where women photographers and creatives feel safe and supported. Women are such naturally communal beings, we thrive in spaces where we can lift each other up, share stories, and support one another. Her is about creating that space, a space that feels like home for women who love film photography and art and who want to grow, both as artists and as individuals.

I dream of Her Exposure becoming a place that opens doors for women to share their art without fear or hesitation. A place where every woman feels seen and heard, where her work is valued and celebrated. And who knows…Maybe one day, I’ll have my own gallery, our own exhibitions, a physical space where we can come together in person and showcase the incredible work coming out of this community.

Why Community Matters

At the end of the day, Her Exposure is all about the power of community. I truly believe that women supporting women is one of the most powerful forces out there. We’re stronger together, and when we come together to celebrate each other’s work, amazing things happen. It’s only natural for us to gravitate toward spaces where we feel seen and supported, and that’s what I want, for every woman who joins us.

So, here’s to the future of Her Exposure! Thank you to everyone who’s been a part of this journey so far, and to those who will join us down the line. Let’s keep building a space where we can be vulnerable, courageous, and unapologetically creative together.
